Sharing Your Faith 101: The KISS Approach

2/26/2013

I can remember many years ago while I was working with a construction company I was trying to assemble something and was making it far more complicated than it actually was.  My boss walked by me and asked me what the problem was and I told him I just couldn’t figure it out and he told me to use the KISS approach.  Naturally I asked what this was and he explained to me that KISS stood for Keep It Simple Stupid.  Once I stepped away from it and looked at what he showed me, it was much easier than what I was trying to do and then I got it.

I suppose we can look at sharing our faith in the same light.  Sometimes we try too hard and make it more complicated than it actually is.  Sharing your faith should be enjoyable, fun, meaningful, and so on; not stressful and difficult.  In fact, Christians should apply the KISS approach to sharing their faith with others and entitle it (Keep It Simple Servants) since we are God’s servants telling others about His good news.  KISS can also stand for (Keep it Short and Sweet) because sharing your faith shouldn’t be like giving a lecture that’s going to bore someone to death, but a simple means of communicating to them what the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to you.

Learn to Let Go

What are you holding on to?  The past, a grudge, you were cheated, a
missed opportunity, an insult, an embarrassing moment, etc.?  Our past is something that can build us up, bring us down, define who we are, or who we  were, and even torture us for the rest of our lives if we let it.

Why is it so hard to let go of our past?  We grip so tight to the bad things that have happened to us or the bad things we have done, it is almost impossible for us to think clearly on living in the present.  We must “learn to let go” of the things that happen in our lives that hold a negative influence on us.  This takes practice and a lot of prayer to be able to make this happen.

In Philippians 3:13-14, it says, “Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of  God in Christ Jesus.”  We are never going to be able to focus on our future if we are too busy digging up the past. Have you ever heard the expression to forgive and forget, this is exactly what God expects us to do? We need to learn to let go, and let God take control.

A Piece of My Heart

As Valentine’s Day is drawing near, and love is in the air, we need to draw near to the words of Jesus Christ as He replied:”‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22: 37-39. Love needs to be something that is cherished and very special in our lives and a word that should not be taken lightly.  As we read the words of Jesus and how passionate He was in teaching love and its importance, we need to learn a lesson.  Love is and always will be something that was created by God; an emotion for us to have to give honor and praise back to Him through how we live our lives and treat others in our life.  I think one of the biggest problems we have is we like to give our heart to too many things and people around us and save very little for the God who created us.  So instead of giving your heart to other people and things, try giving more of your heart to the Lord and I promise, you won’t get it broken nearly as often.

Just a reminder that this is February already and Valentine’s Day is next Thursday so please don’t forget to buy your loved ones a special gift to remind them how much they mean to you.  Speaking of Valentine’s Day, we are going to take the next few weeks and discuss the “L” word, or LOVE with our students.  We will begin with a short movie this week called “Amazing Love”, the story of Hosea.  The movie is 1 hour and 20 minutes so we are starting at 6:30pm instead of 6:45 to make sure we have enough time to see the movie.  Next week we will take some time and discuss the story of Hosea ourselves and see what we remember about his life and his wife!!!
