Life is a Gift

In Arthur Fay Sueltz’s Life at Close Quarters about a young mother who took her six-year-old son into a doctor’s crowded waiting room.  As they waited their turn, the little boy began to ask her all kinds of questions:  Why is grass green? Why is the sky blue? What is water? Why do we have skin? How do birds fly? In half an hour he had managed to cover almost every subject known to humanity, and to the amazement of all the others in the room, his mother had answered each question carefully and patiently.

Finally he got around to God, and as the others listened to his relentless hows and whys and whats, it was obvious that they were all wondering, “How does she stand it?”  But when she answered her son’s next question, she answered theirs too.  He asked, “Why doesn’t God ever just get tired and stop?”  “Because,” the mother replied after a moment’s thought, “because God is love…and love never gets tired.”

That is the message of the Twenty-third Psalm.  God is love, and love never gets tired.  God is like a dedicated, conscientious shepherd who always takes care of the sheep.  We can count on that, because we can count on God!

One morning a first-grade teacher walked into her classroom to find little Johnny, six years old, standing up in the front of the class with his stomach stuck way out.  Thinking that was an odd thing to do, the teacher walked over and asked, “Johnny, why are you standing there with your stomach sticking out?”  “Well,” he answered, “I had a tummy ache this morning, and I went to the school nurse, and she said, ‘Just stick it out till noon and maybe it will be O.K.’”!

Some people go through life like that – just sticking it out till noon, just coping, just enduring, just surviving.  But life is more than that.  Life is more than “sticking it out.”  Life is a wonderful gift to us…even with all its stresses and problems and pressures.  And God wants our lives to be full, meaningful, abundant, and creative.
Yes, there is life in the stress and through the stress and after the stress!
