Best Intentions

III John 11
“…He that doeth good is of God…”

God tells us to do good, but our best intentions are often misunderstood even when we try to help others.  But please keep on trying to do good as a follower of Christ.  Keep on living right and extending a helping hand.  You won’t regret it at the end of the day, unless you’re like this guy:

A man and his wife were awakened at 3 o’clock in the morning by a loud pounding on the door.   The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger, standing in the pouring rain, is asking for a push.

“Not a chance,” says the husband, “it is three o’clock in the morning!”  He slams the door and returns to bed.
“Who was that?” asked his wife. “Just some drunk man asking for a push,” he answers. “Did you help him?” she asks. “No, I did not; it is three in the morning, and it is pouring rain outside!”

“Well, you have a short memory,” says his wife.  “Can’t you remember about three months ago when we broke down and those two guys helped us?  I think you should help him, and you should be ashamed of yourself!” The man does as he’s told, gets dressed, and goes out into the pouring rain.

He calls out into the dark, “Hello, are you still there?”
“Yes,” comes back the answer. “Do you still need a push?” calls out the husband. “Yes, please!” comes the reply from the dark. “Where are you?” asks the husband. “Over here on the swing!” replies the drunk man.

Worry or Peace?

1/20/2009

Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need.
Philippians 4:6

Look around you.  You have reason to worry.  The sun blasts cancer-causing rays.  Air vents blow lung-clotting molds… And do they have to call an airport a terminal?... Some of us have postgraduate degrees from the University of Anxiety…The mother of one teenager bemoaned, “My daughter doesn’t tell me everything.  I’m a nervous wreck,”  Wouldn’t you love to stop worrying?  Could you use a strong shelter from life’s harsh elements?

God offers you just that:  the possibility of a worry-free life.  Not just less worry, but no worry.

Noah Built the Ark in the Sunshine

It will be my joy to preach about Noah and the trials he faced, but especially what his wife and family thought; and yet he obeyed God.

Laugh with me as we think about marriage and its similar problems:

A woman accompanied her husband to the doctor’s office.  After his check up, the doctor called the wife into his office alone.

He said, “Your husband is suffering from a very serious disease, combined with horrible stress.  If you don’t do the following, your husband can die.  Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast.   Be pleasant and make sure he is in a good mood.  For lunch, fix him a nutritious meal.  For dinner, prepare an especially nice meal for him.  Don’t burden him with chores.

If you can do this for at least ten months to a year, I think your husband will regain his health completely.”

On the way home, the husband asked his wife, “What did the doctor say to you?”

“You’re going to die,” she said.

And one other:
A couple drove several miles down a country road, not saying a word.  An earlier
discussion had led to an argument, and neither wanted to concede their position.
As they passed a barnyard of mules and pigs, the husband sarcastically asked,
“Relatives of yours?”
“Yep,” the wife replied, “in-laws.”
